Lack of individual PHP settings per site…no thanks!
I get that not every webhosting service can be amazing. Flywheel has a nice UI. Prices are ok. The performance is alright (nothing amazing). The support has always been good. But today I noticed a weird issue.
- You can’t set a different PHP version per site (e.g. if you wanted some on PHP 7.3 and others on PHP 7.2). All of them have to be on the same version. And to add more salt on the injury, you can’t change the PHP settings yourself. You have to ask support to do it.
I’m sorry but that’s a really dumb limitation especially in this age of virtual technology and available site isolation. Flywheel is ok if you have one tiny site and that’s it. Otherwise, get another webhost!
Oh yeah…and I almost forgot. Their CDN is lame. They don’t have enough mirror servers. I had a client on the USA east coast download assets from their CDN server on the west coast. That’s so lame! What’s the point of CDN then?!
I’m starting to get second thoughts about their UI as well. Yes, it’s cute and feels simple. But also gets annoying real quick. You have to click to 4 places to find out you can’t do anything. Can’t change PHP settings, no file manager, phpmyadmin is tucked off to the side in your bottom-right blindspot, let’s play a game to see how long it takes clients to set up their FTP. (tick tock tick tock)

Ever try WPX hosting? The price kept me away for a while. At $24.99 its a little steep but worth every dime. There is a CDN built in. They offer W3tc for the caching plugin. It’s already setup for their servers. I constantly get 94 on mobile and 98 on Desktop. I am building a theme that will be fast. The reason I changed was the 5 dollar hosting and the CDN I was using just didn’t consistently perform well. Oh I could take all my plugins offline, but I wanted a few like an Seo plugin, security, and a couple more. I am taking off plugins I don’t need after I get my new theme built. I have been in affiliate marketing since 1998, remember Front page? I believe I can make a good income with this setup.
I love their brand personality and support staff attitude, but definitely not their performance.
At my last job, I used to manage over 250 sites on Flywheel and it was awful. First off they just tell you that a major WodPress update is going to be rolled out on all your sites so we madly had to go in and turn off auto updates for major versions. Many of our sites would have fallen over on the same day if this happened.
We then got told that our legacy severs we’re being moved to Google Cloud on a different IP address! We had to hunt down every clients DNS logins and update their records. Not easy when most of our clients we’re small with no IT person. Took a couple of months of emailing all over the place. Since leaving I’ve just gone to a wholesale cPanel setup for clients.
Agree, the Flywheel interface gets old real fast when your managing that many sites and the performance is not great. Plus I had email deliverability issues out the wazoo even with SPF & DKIM setup. I wasted so much time on that.

OUCH! Sorry for your issues, man. But yeah…Flywheel just isn’t for serious use.
