Plesk (Obsidian) Control Panel Review 2020

WordPress hosting Apr 10, 2020 by Johnny

Are you curious how the new Plesk Obsidian version works? I’ll tell you!

Watch this video to see the new UI.

You can compare to the older Plesk Onyx.

I’m a WHM/cPanel guy but still use Plesk for some clients. It works great. User-friendly for non-admins. Mature, stable, has many helpful extensions. Easy enough to figure out how to do most webhosting functions without having to read documentation. In the few moments that I had issues, Plesk documentation was simple enough to understand and/or Plesk support was extremely helpful to resolve the issue immediately.

What I noticed immediately about the new Obsidian version:

  • Overall UI is cleaner quieter – THANK YOU! No more seizure-inducing colors.
  • Interface is a tad faster – faster but in a sticky way (nothing happens when you click, and then instant load). The old way was that it loaded the next page but contents were empty for some time. If you care, cPanel is still way faster (instant loads).
  • They got rid of admin panel advertisements – or at least feels that way. Thank you again!
  • Cool Advanced Monitoring function – fancy! Would be more “advanced” if it could track slow queries or at least show resources used by each user/domain. Ok fine, I won’t be too greedy.
  • Staging features look friendlier
  • WordPress features look friendlier – you have to see it to see what I mean. Very comprehensive. Enabling maintenance mode, debugging, updates. All 1-click easy!
  • More features – probably more features that I don’t use (but other people do).
  • QUICK TIP – that darn SEO Toolkit was causing lots of memory swap on a super packed server. You might want to disable it!

Overall, I’m very pleased with the new Obsidian version. Looks better, moves faster while adding more features. I’m sad to have missed my feedback appointment with their development team but they seemed to have improved in many areas I was complaining about anyway. I think it’s better for me to have seen the new version before giving them feedback anyway.

If you’re on the fence about Plesk and wondering whether it’s for you, I’ll tell you it just got even better. Hope that clears things up for ya!
