Quick thoughts on CSS Scan

Apps Jan 23, 2021 by Johnny 1 Comment

What I liked and what I think can be improved about CSS Scan

It’s a great tool that allows you to quickly copy and edit styles of any visual object you see in your browser.

  • Looks clean and fun to use.
  • Super easy to understand.

The big question is whether it’s truly better than using your browser developer tools.

The answer to that is “no” for me. Because it only shows you what you see. If all you care about is copying certain elements from one site to another, it’ll definitely save you time.

But I think to be really useful, it needs a way for you to quickly target parent divs and containers. Being able to “see” CSS is more than just seeing styles for visible objects…but also to see all the invisible ones that still impact the bottom-most one.

Until CSS Scan can show me parent styling quickly (and help me track down overrides)…I prefer the standard developer tools.

But don’t listen to me. If it fits your workflow, get it! I thought it was really fun to use.

Update 20 minutes later:

  • I just impulse-bought Hoverify right now for only $20. It’s not only cheaper but better IMO (shows more things), and also handy screenshot tool that can quickly grab screens of all tabs.

Hi, Johnny, there is a way in CSS Scan for you to quickly target parent divs and containers, which is by using the keyboard arrows up and down.
